Resources for discussion papers and treaty assignments
- Graphing Data and Using Excel
- For some assignments and the final paper it will be useful to know how to use Excel for graphing (you CAN do it by hand, however). The following links can help.
- Discussion paper #2 on Relative Effectiveness
- Tutorial Videos by Prof. Mitchell for analyzing data for this course. Short youtube tutorials: view these and, in a 1/2 hour, you should be able to analyze data for your final paper more easily.
- How to graph data easily: how to generate a graph easily
- How to index data easily: how to “index” to see trends over time in countries that differ in levels of fish-catch, pollution, or other dependent variables.
- How to select countries for data analysis: how to select countries based on trends you see in their data.
- How to group countries for data analysis: “putting it all together” – delete years or countries you don’t need, group/summarize/index treaty members and non-members, and graph data easily.
- Tips For Using Excel to Graph Your Data
- Example spreadsheet: General approach to converting data into formats for clearer analysis
- Example for graphing: Specific ways to analyze data on countries over time, which is likely to be needed for Treaty Assignment #2 and your Final Paper.
- I have placed many books on the effectiveness of environmental treaties on reserve. Not all treaties are covered, but go to Knight Library and look at the Table of Contents for chapters that analyze your treaty or similar treaties (e.g., if you are going to analyze a fisheries treaty, find a chapter that analyzes another fishery treaty. Look through these books early in the term and let that guide what treaty you select.
